Al Areesh Majlis

Abu Dhabi, UAE
2014

Comprehending the fatal issue of food security in desert regions was the motive of the Majlis project. The client, Al Rawafed Agriculture, had dedicated its project to an ambitious vision of promoting organic food and supporting the available local food in the country that faces harsh weather and extreme lack of water.

X-Architects have been asked to design a resting point, a Majlis, so Al Rawafed can promote their products and finalize their deals in a given site that is adjacent to two palm arenas. Traditionally, palm trees were known as renewable construction materials. Hence, X-Architects endeavored to recreate the oasis architectural methods of the past by using palm tree leaves as building materials.

The availability of the palm wood on site, its passive performance in reducing heat and absorbing humidity inspired X-Architects to reintegrate the historic methods of building into the needs and the demands of people in the 21st century. Consequently, the operable Areesh skin allows cross ventilation and filters the harsh sunlight creating a sensuous play of light and dark.
