Public Shading Structure

Dubai, UAE
2008

The project arose from a client brief that required a space for informal gatherings, activities and business interactions in the plaza of the financial hub of Dubai. To generate an active public pocket in a hot climate like Dubai, the solution by X-Architects was to create an urban shade- a place within a place. And for that nothing is better than a simple tree. Surrounded by the modern architecture of steel & glass, the "shade" is a structure that rides a thin line between natural and artificial evoking memories of wilderness in the middle of a stone plaza. It provides a place for people to gather, relax or contemplate. Besides the haptic experience field with lying, sitting, climbing areas the shade also plays gentle background sounds of the desert, the sea and the mountains/wadis to create a soothing environment for the users.
