Masdar Park is the principal civic space of Masdar City – Abu Dhabi’s internationally acclaimed blueprint for sustainable urban development. It covers 20 hectares and connects research institutions, residences and community life.

Within that park, we were asked to design three architectural interventions: a food hub, a community mosque and an adaptable pavilion. Together, they tell a story about community. We begin with the Masdar Food Hub – the central place of gathering in the entire landscape. From the outset, we were interested in what it could enable: a platform for emerging local chefs and food entrepreneurs, embedded within one of the most significant urban developments in the region. In a city built around innovation and clean technology, we wanted to make the case that community is also built through the everyday rituals of sharing food and discovering something new.

At its heart is a top-lit atrium with insulated skylights that draw natural light deep into the space. The dining areas connect outward to the park through multiple entries and a deliberately permeable edge. A small stage anchors the communal gathering space, allowing the building to shift in tone across the day and week: a quiet setting for lunch, a backdrop for live performance in the evening, a venue for cultural programming that reflects the community it serves. Terrazzo floors, timber slat screens and expanded aluminium mesh cladding give the interior a material warmth.

The Food Hub is part of a wider set of moves across the park: Estidama Mosque, which offers a place for reflection and gathering, and Luma Café, an adaptable pavilion designed to evolve
over time as the community around it changes. Each has a distinct role. Together with the landscape, they form a connected sequence of spaces that support the different rhythms of daily life at Masdar City. In many ways, this is an exercise in urban acupuncture: carefully placed interventions that may be modest individually, but collectively help shape the character, activity and identity of a neighbourhood.
