The Estidama Mosque at Masdar City has been recognized with the Sustainable Construction Project of the Year award at the 2024 Big 5 Global Impact Awards, celebrating its pioneering approach to sustainable design and construction. Located in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, the mosque was designed by the Emirati architectural firm X-Architects and aspires to achieve LEED Platinum certification and an Estidama PBRS “Pearl 3” rating, reflecting its alignment with Abu Dhabi’s green building standards. The project demonstrates exceptional sustainability performance, achieving a 53 percent reduction in energy use through the integration of solar energy from a nearby farm and intelligent sensor systems that regulate lighting and ventilation. Water consumption is reduced by 60 percent thanks to low-flow fixtures, drought-resistant landscaping, and the use of recycled water for irrigation. More than 60 percent of materials were sourced regionally, and 93 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills. Architecturally, the mosque presents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Islamic design, emphasizing natural ventilation, thermal comfort, and a harmonious connection between faith, community, and environmental stewardship.
