X-Architects announces the commencement of construction for The Grand Mosque in Diriyah’s second phase, marking a significant step in creating a new architectural landmark that harmonizes Najdi heritage with contemporary engineering and sustainable design.

Situated alongside the natural edge of the existing wadi, the project offers a rare opportunity to integrate a spiritual place of worship with the surrounding landscape. This intersection of nature and sacred space forms a setting where environmental serenity and spiritual depth reinforce one another.

Historically, the mosque served as a central gathering space, shaping the social and communal life of its neighborhood. Over time, its role became more singular, functioning primarily as a prayer hall. The new proposal seeks to revive this lost connection by introducing activated urban spaces that restore the mosque’s role as a unifying and engaging presence within the community.

Conceptually, the mosque is envisioned as a threshold between earth and sky. Light filters softly through a layered mesh, creating an atmosphere of ambiguity and spiritual calm. At night the building reverses its character, becoming a source of illumination and a beacon along the boulevard.

Located at the convergence of the grand boulevard and Wadi Hanifah, the design serves as an intermediary space that reinforces this critical meeting point. Rather than acting as a barrier, the mosque opens pathways between the urban fabric and the natural environment, creating a sequence of unique experiences for visitors and worshippers.

The architectural language draws from the clarity and strength of traditional Najdi geometry. Two triangular figures, expressed both in plan and in three-dimensional form, anchor the proposal. By reinterpreting the meanings embedded in Najdi architectural elements, the design offers a contemporary vision of a timeless silhouette, bridging heritage and modernity in a coherent forward-looking expression.

This new landmark aspires to honor the cultural identity of Diriyah while shaping an inclusive and enduring place for future generations.
